Severe thunderstorm risk overnight

Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop in our area through this evening, according to the weather service. Several storms could become severe, capable of producing damaging wind gusts, especially in all of north Georgia. And it looks like the holiday weekend will be a “washout” for many people.

“Expecting scattered thunderstorms to continue through at least this weekend,” the latest advisory says. “Rainfall totals of 1-3″ across north Georgia and 0.5-1.5″ across central Georgia are expected. Locally higher amounts over 3″ (3-4 inches in Gainesville) are possible if storms repeatedly move over the same areas especially in the northeast.”

There will be “winners” each day that receive rainfall while there will be areas that do not receive any rainfall which is the nature with these pop-up thunderstorms, the weather service says.

By mid-afternoon today, strong storms were being reported in northeast Alabama just across the state line. A Flood Watch and Flash Flood Warning were in effect there..
