What’s with those bluebirds on Green St.?

Those bluebirds dotting properties along Gainesville’s Green Street are not “bluebirds of happiness.” Far from it.

Note the tear running down the side of the face. That’s a tear of sadness – sadness over what appears to be in store for the historic street: a reconstruction of it by the state Department of Transportation (GDOT) which calls for the removal of many of the trees that line it.

The drawings are the work of Ann Alexander, whose daughter-in-law, Kristine Aldridge Alexander, recently posted the story of the bluebirds on Facebook.

“In addition,” she writes, “local residents and business leaders are tying orange ribbons around threatened trees.

So far, more than 2,000 signatures have been gathered on local petitions pushing for “alternative infrastructure solutions” that “preserve the street’s historic aesthetic.”
