Drought intensifies, now covers most of the state

More than a dozen counties in Georgia are considered to be under a “severe” drought. The drought has also intensified in Hall and all or parts of surrounding counties, which are considered “moderately” dry. That compares to “abnormally” dry a week ago.

The “severe” classification from the updated U.S. Drought Monitor (USDM) covers Twiggs County and parts of a handful of surrounding counties in central Georgia. A few metro Atlanta counties are included as well.

Half of the state is now considered to be in at least a “moderate” drought.

Only all or parts of ten counties in southeast Georgia remain drought-free, according to the report.

So far the level of Lake Lanier doesn’t seem to be suffering from the drought. Thursday morning it stood at 1070.5, down from 1070.7 last Thursday.
