Only five percent of Ga. drought-free

Drought conditions worsened in some parts of Georgia this past week, including a portion of Forsyth and Gwinnett counties, and the drought now has its grip on 95 percent of the state.

The U.S. Drought Monitor (USDM) says only parts of seven counties along the coast and a small part of Towns County remain drought-free.

The majority of the state, including Hall and surrounding counties, are considered “abnormally dry,” but the number of places showing signs of “moderate” and “severe” conditions continues to increase.

The data used in this week’s report were collected before rain moved into the state Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the level of Lake Lanier is feeling the effect of the drought and our prolonged dry spell. Thursday morning, it was 1,067.8, about four feet below full pool.
