Quick action by White Co. firefighters may have prevented wildfire

As a huge wildfire continues to spread in south Georgia, the action by two White County firefighters may have prevented one from developing there, just days about the Buzzard Mountain fire. S. Ga. wildfire update: 16k acres scorched, ‘Forward movement’ of White Co. fire stopped

In a Facebook post the fire department says that shortly after 11:00 Tuesday morning “White County Firefighters Trace Swoszowski and Stephen Martin dispatched themselves on a smoke investigation after noticing a large column of black smoke coming from the area of Dean Mountain Road.

“The Engine 2 crew, based out of White County Fire Station 2 on Duncan Bridge Road, began making their way toward the column and eventually located an outdoor barn structure fully involved with fire. Upon arrival, the structure had already collapsed, and a brush fire had started, moving toward an exposed residence.

“The Engine 2 crew initiated fire attack efforts and, with support from additional responding personnel, was able to stop the forward progression of the brush fire and contain the incident to the original barn structure. Their actions helped prevent further spread and protected the nearby residence.

No injuries were reported.”

The barn has been deemed a total loss. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Georgia State Fire Marshal’s Office.
