A wildfire in Clinch, Brantley and Echols counties has burned more than 16,000 acres and is still only 10% contained, according to the Georgia Forestry Commission’s (GFC) Tuesday night update.
Brantley County Manager Joey Cason is quoted by Georgia News Network as saying at least 42 structures there have destroyed and over 75 residents evacuated, with about 1,500 acres still actively burning.
Other devlopments:
*Local authorities are urging residents of some neighborhoods to evacuate
*Some people have been ordered to evacuate
*Several emergency shelters have been opened
*Schools remain open, but all outdoor activities have been canceled
*Nearly 100 firefighters using 45 pieces of equipment are working the fire
*Gov. Kemp says his office is “working closely” with the forestry commission to respond to the “increasing threat of wildfires in South Georgia.”
*Drought conditions and gusty winds have sparked nearly 100 wildfires across Georgia, with several still burning.
