A new community fund has been launched to ensure the long-term sustainability of Green Street as the state Department of Transportation (GDOT) moves ahead with plans for a redo of the historic thoroughfare. What GDOT says about its Green St. plans
The Keep Green Street Fund will promote historic preservation, environmental stewardship, public enjoyment and thoughtful planning for future generations, organizers announced Friday.
The initiative’s goals include conducting an inventory of existing tree cover, developing a master plan for reforestation, and supporting property owners with matching contributions to increase the size and quality of trees planted. The fund also aims to subsidize a three-year cycle of tree trimming and provide longevity care for both existing and new plantings.
In addition, the program will assist with “generational improvements to the street’s historic and forest character wherever possible.”
Funding will be granted through a board of advisors with assistance from the North Georgia Community Foundation. Gifts are tax-deductible through the foundation.
Organizers said the effort represents a “generational fund” designed to keep Green Street green forever. Establishment gifts have created a foundation to monitor tree health and implement a long-term reforestation plan along both sides of the street.
Meanwhile, an online petition opposing GDOT’s plans continues to circulate: ‘Save Green Street’ petition started
