Gville secures No. 3 category ranking in nation in digital cities survey

The Gainesville Department of Information Technology (DoIT), has received national recognition for its leadership in and dedication to improving digital services and government operations on the local level.

GAINESVILLE NEWS RELEASE:

“The City was among a handful of municipalities across the nation recognized by the Center for Digital Government (CDG) as winners of the 2025 Digital Cities Survey Awards. Gainesville secured the No. 3 spot for the population category of up to 75,000, joining the cities of Tamarac, Florida (No. 1) and Marietta (No. 2).

“What stands out this year isn’t just the technology, it’s the focus on the impact on constituent services,” said CDG Chief Programs Officer Teri Takai. “These cities are applying innovation where it matters most: keeping people housed, making streets safer and building community trust. They’re showing that when technology is guided by purpose, it delivers results that citizens can feel.”

This annual survey and awards program recognizes forward-thinking cities propelling municipal government innovation to new heights, while also redefining it. In fact, the CDG stated this year’s honorees demonstrate how cities are turning technology into trust, measurable impact and stronger communities.

“This recognition from the Center for Digital Government highlights how the City of Gainesville is using technology to make a real impact — from improving service delivery to strengthening community trust,” said Gainesville Chief Information Officer Russ Hilmandolar, who oversees DoIT. “We’re proud to be among the cities setting the pace for digital government nationwide. This is a long-term, strategic journey for our team — we have improved from 10th place in 2022, 8th place in 2023, to 3rd place in 2025 and continuing to always get better.”

“We’re honored to be recognized in the 2025 Digital Cities Survey for our work in improving digital services and government operations,” said Gainesville City Manager Bryan Lackey. “This recognition reflects our team’s dedication to making the City of Gainesville a more connected, secure and inclusive place to live.”

Also joining Gainesville in the top five for its population category were the City of Coral Gables, Florida (No. 4) and the Village of Tinley Park, Illinois (No. 5).

Winners were honored at the Digital Cities Awards Dinner during the National League of Cities’ 2025 City Summit Conference Nov. 19 at the Hyatt Regency Salt Lake City hotel in Salt Lake City, Utah…
