BCSO: A bit of advice

The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) has a warning for would-be vandals who target those Flock Safety cameras around the county: They are government-owned property and intentionally damaging, vandalizing, or destroying a Flock camera is not just an act of vandalism it is a felony offense under Georgia law.

“Individuals responsible will face criminal charges, fines, restitution, and other legal consequences.” A Facebook posting points out that they are used to assist law enforcement in investigating crimes, locating stolen vehicles, and enhancing public safety.

“We are presently looking into three incidents involving criminal damage to government property,” the posting continues. “Once the individuals are identified, they will face charges and be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

“Whether you’re curious about the features or privacy aspects, we’re here to help. Don’t hesitate to reach out; we’re eager to assist you in any way we can.”

There has been controversy surrounding the system in many parts of the country. A Charlotte, N.C., television station, WBTV, recently did an in-depth report on the Flock cameras, including the pros and cons of them: 2 Flock cameras ‘intentionally cut down’ in South Carolina town amid nationwide camera controversy

And just yesterday, here in Georgia, the GBI announced the arrest of five former police officers who are accused of misusing them. You can find that story of the Georgia News page on this website.
