Lumpkin sheriff’s response to public reaction to his recent defense of Flock cameras

Lumpkin County Sheriff Stacy Jarrard says public reaction to his recent video defending the use of Flock cameras has convinced him that additional safeguards are needed.

Jarrard said he plans to ask Georgia lawmakers about creating statewide regulations for the technology, including requirements for training, written policies and tighter control of data collected by the cameras.

The original video, in which he displayed a damaged camera and offered a $1,000 reward for information on the culprits, went viral and has drawn more than 30,000 comments, most of them critical of the devices.

Public criticism of the devices has increased significantly in recent weeks because of ever-growing reports in Georgia and elsewhere of law enforcement officials illegally using the system for personal reasons.
