With the possibility of an ICE processing facility in Oakwood still a reality, there was a protest at an ICE detention center in New Jersey Monday.
The facility has been the site of protests before, amid reports of a labor and hunger strike by those housed there.
Protesters blocked government vehicles Monday and in response ICE agents used gas canisters and batons against them. The demonstration took place at Delaney Hall, a 1,000-bed facility near Newark.
Things grew more tense Saturday and Sunday and worsened Monday as political leaders called for more oversight following weeks of accusations of inhumane conditions inside the facility.
The Department of Homeland Security denied the accusations, calling them “smears.”
