WEEKEND POLICE BEAT: Serious accidents, chases, drug charges

*Accidents in Habersham and Hall counties killed one and seriously injured a suspected drunk driver.

The Habersham crash occurred Saturday morning on Toccoa Highway. The state patrol says Francisco Matias, 22, Mt. Airy died at the scene after he lost control in a curve near Kinney Road. His car overturned several times and he was thrown from the vehicle. Though he was wearing his seatbelt, the accident report says it broke during the crash.

The Hall County crash seriously injured Shawn Migliore, 46, Gainesville. State troopers say he lost control of his car on Pine Vallley Road Saturday night and that it left the road and hit two trees. He was not wearing his seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle, sustaining serious injuries. Later, at the hospital it was discovered that he had been driving under the influence, according to the state patrol.

*Oakwood Police were involved in a slow-speed chase that began when an officer attempted a traffic stop. Chief Tim Hatch said speeds never reached more than 35 mph but that when the car finally did stop, the driver resisted arrest and had to be tasered to bring him under control. Daniel Mejia, 27, was booked into the Hall County Jail Saturday night. He faces ten a total of ten charges including fleeing/attempting to elude and some related to illegal drugs.

*The Georgia State Patrol made an arrest for fleeing/attempting to elude as well. This was Friday night. Jarvis Yizar, 38, is also facing drug charges in addition to several that are traffic related.
