UPDATE: NW Ga. wildfire continues to grow, second one ignites

Firefighters continue to battle the Chestnut Mountain Wildfire on the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest in Gordon and Whitfield counties and the fire, now in its third day, continues to grow. Meanwhile, another fire has broken out in the area.

Chestnut Mountain Fire
The Chestnut Mountain fire is now approximately 425 acres in size. The wildfire began near the Chestnut Mountain Shooting Range on Wednesday. The fire is under investigation but appears to be “human caused,” the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) says. Currently no structures are threatened.

Smoke will likely continue to impact the area near Dalton and Resaca, for several days. An elevated Fire Danger risk will continue into this weekend, especially Saturday and Sunday as very dry air returns along with locally gusty winds.

Old Federal Fire
The new wildfire in Murray County located along Old Federal Road approximately 5 miles southeast of Chatsworth, started Thursday night and has grown to approximately 78 acres. Firefighters from the USFS, Georgia Forestry Commission, and Murray County Fire Department are working to create a fire break around the fire.
