*The company that runs Georgia Power is reporting an increase in profits. The Southern Company saw a $400 million rise in 2024 to a profit of $4.4 (B) billion. The increase was credited to higher utility revenues. Georgia Power’s profits in particular rose 22 percent.
*Augusta commissioners visited the state capitol this to advocate for a $15 million request to build a veterans cemetery in Augusta, as the nearest ones are in Milledgeville and Columbia, South Carolina. The proposed cemetery, near Gracewood, would be the largest at 200 acres. They also sought funds for Hurricane Helene relief and state benefits for veterans to ensure they do not lose benefits.
*The Evans County Board of Education in is proposing a 32 percent property tax increase, raising concerns among residents. Superintendent Marty Waters says the increase is necessary to meet state mandates and secure a four-million-dollar grant for the district.
