Several current and former Democratic members of the state legislature were at the state capitol on Wednesday to urge Governor Kemp to protect Georgians at risk of losing their SNAP benefits. Fulton County Commission Chairman Rob Pitts also expressed support for the idea.
Atlanta News First reports that the governor’s office stated Gov. Kemp cannot unilaterally direct those funds and believes state dollars can’t fund a federal program. Food assistance benefits will be suspended this Saturday — unless there’s a change.
According to the Georgia Department of Human Services, 28 percent of SNAP recipients are seniors with disabilities.
Beneficiaries can still use any remaining funds from their October payment.
