S. Hall daycare worker charged with child cruelty, battery

A Buford woman faces criminal charges after she caused an injury to a child at a South Hall daycare center where she was employed, according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO).

“Susana Beatriz Mendoza Sandin, 61, was arrested on charges of aggravated battery and second-degree child cruelty,” sheriff’s office spokeswoman B.J. Williams said.

The sheriff’s office began an investigation on Friday after the child’s parents reported the three-year-old had suffered an elbow injury at Winnford Academy in Flowery Branch.

“The child’s mother had received a phone call from school officials the day before…informing her that her child was injured and needed to be picked up from school,” Williams said. “The school informed the mother that a teacher had apparently caused the injury by lifting the child in the air. The mother took her child to an urgent care facility where the child was treated for ‘nursemaid’s elbow,’ a partial dislocation of the elbow. The case was turned over to HCSO criminal investigators.”

The investigation, including review of security footage from the school, indicated Mendoza Sandin had picked up the child by the right wrist, jerked the arm, carried the child and then dropped the child on the ground. The incident occurred in an outdoor play area on the daycare center property.

After she was interviewed about the incident, Mendoza Sandin was arrested at sheriff’s office headquarters and then taken to the county jail. She remains in custody with no bond.
