As Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch faces the possibility of being removed from office via a recall election, it would appear that history is on his side. According ballotpedia.com, no Georgia sheriff has ever been recalled, not that there have not been attempts.
Some recent examples:
Walton County (2025-2026): An active recall petition was launched against Sheriff David Thompson.
Dade County (2025): A recall petition was filed against Sheriff Don Townsend.
Richmond County (2023): An effort to recall Sheriff Richard Roundtree failed to gather the required sponsor signatures.
Worth County (2017): A recall campaign against Sheriff Jeff Hobby—prompted by a mass, nonintrusive pat-down search of students at Worth County High School—failed to make the ballot.
That’s not to say Hall County has been recall-free.
The most notable occurred about 45 years ago when all five county commissioners were kicked out of office because their decision to disband the county-operated fire department and contract with a private service, a move which didn’t last very long.
The new commissioners eventually voted to return to a county-operated department which is what we have today.
The move to recall Sheriff Couch stems from his arrest earlier this year on a DUI charge and his return to work just recently after serving a 90-day suspension which was imposed by Gov. Kemp.
