The city of Oakwood says it has not been contacted by the federal government about the possible location of an ICE detention facility in the city.
City officials issued a statement Thursday following the disclosure earlier this week that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has identified a site on McEver Road as a potential site for such a facility along with about 20 others around the country. Is an ICE detention facility coming to Flowery Branch? The site has a Flowery Branch address, but it turns out that it is actually inside the city limits of Oakwood.
“If the city is approached by any government agency concerning a detention facility,” the statement says, “we will promptly notify the public.”
The statement goes on to say that Oakwood officials are aware of the potential infrastructure impacts such a facility could have on the community.
