Norton sole qualifier to Dunagan post on GCC

Bob Norton is the only candidate who qualified for a special election May 19 for the Gainesville City Council seat held by the late Danny Dunagan. Qualifying closed Wednesday.

Dunagan died last year not long after resigning from his council post for medical reasons. The city council then appointed a “caretaker” member who served until Dec. 31. Since then, it has operated with only four members.

Norton said Thursday his desire to serve has been bolstered by a strong tradition of visionary
public servants who have helped shape Gainesville into what it is today.

“Danny was the visionary for much of the growth and development that Gainesville has
seen over the last 20 years, especially downtown and into midtown,” Norton said.
Norton says his priorities will be centered around smart growth and the infrastructure
needed to support it.

“I am running to ensure that as we grow, we protect the core values, quality of life, and
sense of community that have defined Gainesville for generations,” Norton said. “My
experience leading large teams, managing budgets, and guiding strategic decisions will
help me contribute a steady, thoughtful perspective on the council.

“I am committed to safeguarding what makes Gainesville great while helping shape a
future that the next generation will be proud to inherit.”

Norton serves as Executive Chairman of Norton Agency Insurance, a member of Legacy Risk Solutions, a company of 650 employees in six states.
