New details emerge for reconstruction of a part of Dawsonville Hwy.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) recently awarded a $4.2 million contract for improvements to Dawsonville Highway between Ahaluna Drive and Shallowford Road, and Wednesday new details about the project emerged.

This infrastructure upgrade will address existing congestion and traffic flow concerns in the Gainesville area by connecting existing right-turn auxiliary lanes, according to GDOT. The result will be a continuous 0.83-mile segment with three through lanes in each direction.

Key components of the project include:

  • Widening and reconstruction of SR 53/SR 53 Connector from Ahaluna Drive to Shallowford Road
  • Installation of advanced Video Detection Systems (VDS) for improved traffic monitoring and efficiency
  • Modification of the median at Beechwood Boulevard into a Restricted Crossing U-Turn (R-CUT) to prohibit eastbound left turns onto SR 53, enhancing safety and reducing conflict points
  • Installation of a dual R-CUT median between McEver Corners Shopping Center and the unnamed access road adjacent to Jackson EMC (1000 Dawsonville Hwy) to improve flow and reduce congestion at this key intersection between Beechwood Boulevard and McEver Road
