Nearly 3,000-gallon sewage spill

The Gainesville Department of Water Resources
(DWR) has stopped a sewer spill into an unnamed tributary to Lake Lanier.

The spill was “located and remedied” Friday, city officials said Monday.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., they received a call from a citizen concerning an overflowing manhole near the 2800 block of Browns Bridge Road entering an unnamed tributary to Flat Creek.

City staff determined the overflow to be caused by construction debris lodged in the sewer line. The clog was cleared and flow restored by 10 a.m.

DWR estimates about 7,200 gallons reached the tributary. The area of the spill was
assessed and no dead or stressed aquatic life were found.

DWR reminds the public not to dispose of construction debris in the sanitary sewer
collection system.
