Macon-Bibb Co. hiring freeze; Rural health care grant; Deadly prison riot

*Macon-Bibb County is putting a hold on hiring for now. The school system revealed last week that it’s experiencing a five-and-a-half-million-dollar shortfall. That means a hiring freeze and a slash in non-essential spending will be implemented.  

*Georgia gets a $219 million grant to improve rural healthcare. The feds awarding it in the 1st round of annual grants intended to “transform” states. This grant is the 1st of 5 and means Georgia’s on-track to receive about 75% of the $1.4 billion it requested from the federal government.   

*The Department of Corrections is investigating a deadly riot at Washington County State Prison. Sheriff Joel Cochran says deputies were called out to help with security on the perimeter of the prison when several major fights broke out on Sunday. Three prisoners were reportedly killed, while another dozen inmates and one guard were injured.
