Local group ramping up opposition to ICE facility, data centers

With announcement recently that the federal government has purchased the Oakwood site chosen for an ICE detention/processing facility, a Hall County group is calling for a local moratorium on such facilities and data centers here.

“What should we do now in light of the warehouse sale?” begins a social media posting by Indivisible Hall. “Attend local governmental meetings to demand that the Board of Commissioners and City Councils pass a moratorium on all non-county owned detention facilities.”

And then it lists a schedule of upcoming meetings of such groups: :

*️Hall County Board of Commissioners meeting on Thursday, February 26th at 6:00pm, at the Commission Meeting Room on 2875 Browns Bridge Road, GVL GA.

*️Gainesville City Council meeting on Tuesday, March 3rd 5:30pm at the GVL Public Safety Complex, 701 Queen City Parkway, Gainesville, GA 30501.

*️Oakwood City Council meeting on Monday, March 9th 7:00pm at Oakwood City Hall, 4035 Walnut St, Oakwood, GA 30566

“Contact local governmental bodies and demand they pass the moratoriums. On BOTH detention centers AND data centers! (EDITOR’S NOTE: The county commission Monday at a work session did discuss the possibility of a data center moratorium. See separate story.)

“Prioritize the voices and experiences of those most directly impacted by the Oakwood detention center- immigrants and Hispanic people! Create spaces for them, uplift their stories and voices, support them financially and get involved in local efforts guided by them.”
