Gville native who was a renown composer, educator, organist dies

Gainesville native James Leroy Pethel, described in his obituary as “a distinguished composer, educator, and organist,” died a week ago in Dallas, Texas.

Pethel, 89, a graduate of Truett-McConnell College (now University) in Cleveland and Carson-Newman College (now University) in Jefferson City, Tenn., served on the faculty at Carson-Newman for 37 years as Distinguished Composer‑in‑Residence and Associate Professor of Music. He also served as the principal organist for several church congregations.

As a composer, Pethel published more than 300 works, including organ solos, choral anthems, and hymns that are performed widely across the country.

A memorial service will be held in Ellis Chapel at Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas on February 7.
