Eight disaster-trained volunteers from the American Red Cross of Georgia left this week to support disaster relief operations in southern California where dangerous wildfires are burning, forcing thousands of people to evacuate.
With tens of thousands of people forced from their homes, the Red Cross is working alongside others to provide safe shelter, food, emotional support and health services.
“It’s a passion of mine to serve,” says Marzetta Dennis, a Red Cross volunteer from Covington, who is one of the eight. “From a very early age, I dedicated my life to serving and the Red Cross provides me with meaningful opportunities to support various communities.”
Hurricane-force winds have fanned growing fires, challenging firefighters’ efforts to contain the blazes as the flames consume thousands of acres.
