Deputy injured trying to arrest Gainesville man

A Gainesville man was released on bonds of $16,900 today (Tuesdy) following his arrest Saturday morning after an altercation with a Hall County sheriff’s deputy during which the officer was injured. The deputy was conducting a prowling investigation at the time.

HALL CO. SHEREIFF’S OFFICE NARRATIVE:

“The incident occurred just after 6:30 when deputies responded to a call about a man dressed in dark clothing darting between traffic on Sardis Road near the roundabout at Ledan Road/Ledan Extension. When deputies arrived, they saw the man, later identified as Victor Hugo Yanez-Aguayo, 25, squatting next to the roadway.

Deputies made contact with Yanez-Aguayo, determined his address was nearby, and escorted him home. During the course of the interaction with deputies, Yanez-Aguayo became increasingly agitated and upset, and deputies determined he might be having a mental health episode. Initially, Yanez-Aguayo was released to his mother at the residence; however, as one deputy was speaking to her on the front porch, Yanez-Aguayo approached the glass storm door and stared down the deputy. He knocked on the door to get the deputy’s attention, and he then pointed at the deputy, making slashing motions with his thumb across his throat as a threat to the deputy.

The deputy opened the door to detain Yanez-Aguayo following the threat. At that point, Yanez-Aguayo lunged at the deputy, grabbing the deputy by the neck. A scuffle ensued between Yanez-Aguayo and the deputy, and both fell from the porch to the ground. The deputy subdued Yanez-Aguayo and called for emergency medical personnel to come to the scene. Yanez-Aguayo sustained a bloody nose and lip during the physical altercation. The deputy sustained a small cut on his right hand; he also had redness on his neck where the suspect grabbed him.

The deputy transported Yanez-Aguayo to the hospital for assessment until he was cleared for transport to the Hall County Jail around 4:00 p.m.  Yanez-Aguayo was charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer (felony) and misdemeanor obstruction.”
