College merger planned; Just saying ‘no’; Time to ‘pay up’

*The state board of regents is being asked by Chancellor Sonny Perdue to approve the merger of East Georgia State College and Georgia Southern University. The consolidation initiative aims to reduce administrative costs while maintaining high standards for teaching and research, Perdue says. If approved, the consolidation would bring the number of public colleges and universities in the system down to 25.

*A 92-year-old Augusta homeowner, Elizabeth Thacker, is fighting the home of the Masters Golf Tournament, refusing to sell her property near the Augusta National Golf Club, despite the club’s attempts to expand. Thacker says her home, located just outside the north gate of the golf club, holds sentimental value as the place where she and her late husband raised their family. Augusta National has made repeated offers for the property, but Thacker remains steadfast in her decision to stay.

*About 1.7 million Georgians are back on the hook for repaying student loans after the COVID pause – and the transition is far from easy for many of them. Lots of confusion and some borrowers could see big drops in their credit scores. And more are defaulting on their loans.
