Braselton police chief arrested

The GBI has arrested and charged Braselton Police Chief Michael Steffman with Violation of Oath by a Public Officer, Stalking, Harassing Communications, and several counts of Misuse of Automated License Plate Recognition Systems following an investigation that lasted several months.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI to investigate allegations against the 49-year-old Steffman. The investigation revealed that Steffman misused the automated license plate recognition systems to harass and stalk several individuals, according to a GBI news release.

He was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Jackson County Jail.

A news release on the Braselton website says Zach Tiller has been named Interim Chief by Town Manager Jennifer Scott and in the only reference to Steffman, that he has “announced his retirement and resignation…for personal reasons.”
