The Georgia House has passed a bill with strong, bipartisan support takes steps to address the growing chronic absenteeism in the state’s schools by ensuring students cannot be expelled solely for missing school.
The bill also mandates a more localized and individualized approach to reviewing absenteeism cases., requiring local boards of education to adopt policies that identify and support students who are chronically absent.
Meanwhile, some Georgia Republicans are trying to scale down early voting locations.
WSB-TV says there’s a bill in the works now that reduces the number of early polls down to just one for each county. More than 70 percent of Georgia voters cast an early ballot in the last general election.
But Sen. Jason Esteves says it will just lead to longer lines on Election Day if it were to pass.
