Funeral services will be held Thursday for a man who served as Lumpkin County’s Sole Commissioner for nearly a quarter-century. J.B. Jones died Monday at the age of 94.
Jones held office at a time when many of Georgia’s smaller counties were governed by one individual, instead of the boards of commissioners that are now the norm.
Among his accomplishments while in office and afterward as a community leader, according to his obituary, were formation of a hospital authority, an industrial authority, and support of the Lumpkin County Board of Health, The Lumpkin County Historical Society and The Chestatee-Chattahoochee Resource and Conservation Development Council.
Jones was a former President of The Georgia Association of County Commissioners and secretary-treasurer of The Association of Tennessee Valley Authority Counties.
