*An attempt to remove Georgia’s touchscreen voting machines before the November elections is hitting a roadblock. The State Board of Elections turned down a proposal that was in support of using hand-filled paper ballots. Board chair John Fervier said they didn’t have the authority to go through with the plan. State lawmakers still haven’t addressed a voting law they passed two years ago to switch from counting votes using QR codes.
*Former President Joe Biden is throwing his political weight behind a candidate in the race for Georgia’s governor. He has announced his endorsement of former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms in the Democratic primary, which comes up this month. Bottoms served as a senior advisor for part of Biden’s presidential term. Other Democratic candidates include former lieutenant governor Geoff Duncan.
*Emergency responders are making big progress on south Georgia wildfires. Rain helped firefighters contain the 22-thousand-acre Brantley County fire by 75 percent over the weekend. The school system will open again today after closures over potential dangers last week. Close to half of the 32-thousand-acre fire in Clinch and Echols counties is also contained.
