*A 27-year-old security guard, Gregory Thomas III, is recovering after being shot in the chest after asking a man to leave a property. Despite being shot inches from his heart, Thomas tried to flag down drivers for help before receiving CPR from a bystander. Speaking to Atlanta News First, Thomas says his only focus now is getting back home to his family.
*Drivers in Chatham County will encounter speed cameras in school zones as students return to class, with both the Savannah and Chatham County Police Departments operating school zone camera programs. Savannah Now reports the cameras will be active before, during, and after school hours to ensure safety. Changes to state laws require local governments to re-license the cameras, with some departments like Garden City opting out. Overall, county police say the cameras have reduced speeding in school zones by at least 95%.
*The first day of school at Sagamore Hills Elementary School in DeKalb County didn’t quite go as planned. It was disrupted by a power outage caused by a fallen tree. WSBTV reports that students and staff were transported to Lakeside High School while crews worked to restore power. Students were returned to their school for dismissal.
