Tree roots blamed for N. Gville sewage spill

The Gainesville Department of Water Resources (DWR) has stopped a minor sewage spill into a Limestone Creek tributary. City officials say it was discovered Wednesday afternoon.

“At approximately 2:45 p.m. April 29, a homeowner discovered a discharging sanitary sewer manhole near the 700 block of Robinhood Trail,” spokeswoman Christina Santee-Moss wrote in an email. “The discharge entered an unnamed tributary of Limestone Creek and was determined to be caused by tree roots in the sewer line. The blockage was cleared by 3:30 p.m. and flow restored to the sanitary sewer line.”

DWR estimates approximately 225 gallons of sewage spilled. “The area of the spill was assessed and no dead or stressed aquatic life were found,” Santee-Moss added. “All field parameters for water quality were within state water quality standards.”
