The National Weather Service (NWS) is no longer in charge of the weather station at the Gainesville airport. That’s a decision that was made by the city, according to Peachtree City weather service spokesman Ty Vaughn, who added the FAA is now responsible for it.
A spokeswoman for the city says it was a FAA decision.
“The Automated Surface Observing System originally maintained by the National Weather Service at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport was selected by FAA for replacement due to age.” Christina Santee said. “FAA made this decision, funded the new equipment in full and will be responsible for maintaining the new Automated Weather Observing Station going forward.”
Vaughn said NWS Peachtree City still maintains equipment at seven north and central Georgia sites.
