Dewey Alverson, a retired longtime high school football coach in Georgia, who once coached at Johnson High, has died. He passed away Sunday at the age of 92.
For 30 years, Alverson dedicated his life to coaching high school football in Georgia, leaving a lasting legacy both on and off the field. His most notable tenure came at Southwest DeKalb High School, where he served as head coach from 1959 to 1978. Under his leadership, the Panthers compiled a 129-76-6 record. Thirteen of his 20 teams had winning seasons, and two captured region championships.
The pinnacle of his coaching career came in 1972, when Southwest DeKalb won the Class AA State Championship, defeating Gainesville 16-12 in a thrilling come-from-behind victory to cap a 13-1 season.
After leaving Southwest DeKalb, he returned to Gainesville where he took on a new challenge: head football coach at Johnson High. During his time there, he guided the Knights to three winning seasons, including their first in over a decade. Across both programs, Alverson finished with an overall coaching record of 161-145-8.
His funeral will be Friday at 2:00 at Memorial Park Funeral Home South.
