Fire destroys courthouse; Cell phone ban; Fetus found

*A massive fire engulfed the Historic Floyd County Courthouse in downtown Rome Monday afternoon. According to officials, the blaze broke out just before 2:30 on Monday. As fire crews battled to get it under control, police helped evacuate the building. The courthouse’s grand bell tower was lost when it collapsed. The building was undergoing extensive renovation. No word yet on a possible cause of the fire.

*A bill banning students in Georgia’s public high schools from having cellphones in class is headed to the governor’s office. State legislators gave final approval to it Monday. Cellphones are already banned in classrooms in other schools in the state.

*Police are investigating after a fetus was found outside an apartment building in Valdosta. Authorities say the fetus was found on Sunday in a grassy area near the Brittany Woods Apartments. Valdosta Police Chief Leslie Manahan says the fetus has been taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Decatur for examination. No other information was available Monday.
