The water that comes into Lake Lanier from the northeast Georgia mountains in the Chattahoochee River should be cleaner at least for a few days. And the water that flows out of the lake and downstream should be cleaner, too.
That’s because of the hundreds of volunteers who showed up over the weekend for the annual “Sweep the ‘Hooch.” The covered the river from its origin in the Helen area to Columbus. There were 65 cleanup sites in the 13 counties through which the river flows between the two towns.
Last year, the organizers said they pulled a record 41 tons of trash and recyclables from the river. This year’s total is not yet available.
