GPD officer shot, shooter killed during a following standoff

A Gainesville police officer, responding to a domestic disturbance call, was shot Thursday night and the shooter was shot and killed during a subsequent standoff that lasted well into Friday morning.

GAINESVILE POLICE DEPT (GPD) NEWS RELEASE:

“Gainesville Officers responded to the area of Briarwood Drive and Skyline Drive just after 10:30 Thursday night after a distressed caller notified dispatch she felt her life was threatened by a male at her residence.

As officers responded to the area to attempt make contact, one GPD officer was struck by gunfire from the male subject. Another GPD officer returned fire. After the exchange of gunfire, the subject barricaded himself inside a residence in the area. The GPD officer that was struck by gunfire was transported to the medical center in physically stable condition, as we believe the ballistic vest helped protect the officer.

Hall County Sheriff’s Office/SWAT, Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, Flowery Branch Police, and many neighboring jurisdictions responded to assist us. Attempts to have the subject peacefully surrender developed into a 6-hour standoff with the subject firing additional shots from inside the residence. The subject then exited the residence and engaged SWAT/GPD officers in gunfire. Two additional GPD officers were transported to the medical center for evaluation and are physically stable.

The shooter, an adult male, was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The GBI will be conducting the officer involved shooting investigation. This is an active and ongoing investigation and we will update our community as information becomes available.”
