Lake level continues to rise, drought maintains its hold on state

As January comes to a close, data from the Corps of Engineers show the level of Lake Lanier continues to rise and as of Friday morning was more than a foot higher than it was New Year’s Day. The level has increased 1.2 feet to 1065.5 since the start of the new year, still well below full pool.

The drought, meantime, continues to affect the whole state with little or no change in intensity in north Georgia, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. However, the area of “severe” drought continues to creep northward and is now as far north as a line from LaGrange to Forsyth to Sylvania on the South Carolina line.

Here in northeast Georgia, a pocket of “severe” conditions can be found in the Elberton area. Meanwhile, Gainesville and vicinity is a mixture of “severe,” “moderate,” and “abnormally” dry conditions.
