A campaign to clean up family cemeteries in Lumpkin County has been launched by the Lumpkin County-Dahlonega Historical Society.
“Since we posted the photos of the Teal family Cemetery several days ago, we have had several followers who wish to volunteer to help with cleaning up the cemetery, providing that permission can be obtained,” the group posted on Facebook.
“We made phone calls to county offices (recently) in hoping to get clarification on how to get permission to clean up the cemetery. Remarkably, after contacting the offices of the LC Tax Assessors, County Clerk and Probate Clerk, no one could give us an answer on a county ordinance or policy which addresses the issue of abandoned, non-maintained or private cemeteries.”
In addition to the Teal cemetery, the historical society noted there are “many other” family or unmaintained small cemeteries scattered around the county.
