Fulton Co. animal control changes; More data centers; Dublin schools losing teachers; Amend school speed zone camera law?

(GA. NEWS NETWORK)

*Animal control protocols are changing in Fulton County after a fatal dog attack. The county police department is taking over animal control duties from LifeLine Animal Project partially because two employees failed to report the attack on Donna Nguyen in Union City last year. The AJC says animal control officers may have euthanized four dogs that had nothing to do with the attack, since there were no eyewitnesses. A Union City police officer was also criticized for waiting 20 minutes to respond to the emergency call.

*Columbia County leaders are looking at proposals for two new data centers. WRDW reports one site at just under 900-acres near the White Oak Business Park would house 18 buildings.

*Dublin City Schools is transitioning into a period with several dozen fewer teachers. WMAZ reports close to 50 teachers have worked their last day after the district cut staff this fall in order to make up for a 13-million-dollar budget deficit. Students will receive extra days off while staffing assignments are reorganized.

*Representative Dale Washburn wants the General Assembly to consider giving each community a choice when it comes to school speed zone cameras in the state. He says he would like to see a law that requires a local referendum for new cameras or extensions of existing camera contracts. 13WMAZ reports some residents expressed concerns about the cameras actually causing increased traffic and create safety issues in residential areas. Washburn believes the cameras are a “solution to a problem” some areas don’t have and are more about revenue than safety.
