Rain chances increase this weekend but don’t expect a drought buster

Continued dry conditions are expected across north Georgia through the start of the weekend, but the chances for rain will increase late Saturday through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). “Unfortunately,” forecasters say, “any rainfall will likely not make much of a dent in drought conditions.”

A passing cold front will bring “quick-hitting” chances for showers and thunderstorms, some strong, Sunday. Accumulations are expected to remain light (generally less than three-quarters of an inch), “and are unlikely to quell our worsening drought conditions,” forecasters say.

The odds of getting at least half-an-inch range from 13% in Macon to 52% in Rome. Gainesville can expect less than two-tenths of an inch.

And low rainfall amounts are expected over the next 7-10 days with the drought only likely to worsen.
