Less than two percent of Georgia now drought-free

Drought conditions now cover more than 98 percent of Georgia, according to this week’s report from the U.S. Drought Monitor (USDM). Only all or portions of several northeast Georgia mountain counties remain drought-free: Habersham, Rabun, Towns, White, Union, Lumpkin and Fannin.

The worse conditions ae in parts of Forsyth and Gwinnett counties, much of west Georgia and virtually all of south Georgia, except along the coast and in the Waycross area. In about a dozen of those counties, conditions are now considered “extreme.”

And the dry weather continues to have an adverse effect on the level of Lake Lanier. It’s down another three-tenths of a foot this week, to 1067.6.
