*The Dalton police officers who wrongly detained an undocumented Mexican resulting her being detained by ICE, has resigned. Leslie O’Neal stopped Ximena Arias-Cristobal May 5 for a wrong turn, but police video showed it was another car that was at fault. ICE put Arias-Cristobal in the Stewart Detention Center in south Georgia, creating national outrage among immigrant rights groups, but she was released last week and is now back home in Dalton. She’s lived in the U.S. since she was four and attends college. ICE detained her for two weeks until a judge granted her a $1,500 bond. She has a immigration status hearing next year.
*Georgia struggles with mental health care access, especially for Black communities. Organizations like Silence the Shame are working to reduce stigma in Black communities and provide resources. The AJC reports policy experts and advocates are emphasizing the importance of community-based organizations and initiatives.
*Investors are taking over more properties in metro Atlanta. A Georgia State University professor tells WSB-TV that just three corporations now own close to 40,000 homes in the region. For example, such groups now control around ten percent of all homes in Paulding and Henry counties. Experts say corporations are able to sway market prices by owning so many properties.
