*Polk County schools are back in class this week despite a sizable flu outbreak. Buildings were shut down on Friday and Monday after close to 800 students stayed out with flu symptoms. Crews completed a deep clean so children and staff could return back to a normal schedule. Georgia’s flu activity is considered very high, along with the rest of the southeast.
*A bill in the Georgia state House with nearly 100 co-sponsors aims to repeal school zone cameras, citing concerns about automated law enforcement. Some lawmakers, including Rep. Dewey McClain, question the necessity of cameras operating outside of school hours. 11Alive reports some constituents have complained about being wrongly tagged as speeders by the camera systems, leading to calls for the program to be stopped. Supporters of the program, like Bob Dallas, say the cameras offer more safety benefits in slowing traffic in school zones and urge for modifications rather than elimination.
*The Trump Administration’s push to deport illegal immigrants has led to some confusion among the Georgia’s Latino community. State Rep. Reynaldo Martinez tells Atlanta News First some Latinos are misinformed and believe they’ll be deported even though they’re here legally. ICE says their raids have focused on illegal immigrants who have committed crimes or don’t have legal status here. They say they’ve arrested close to 7,400 people since President Trump took office on Jan. 20. There are an estimated 1.1 million Latinos in Georgia.
