Savannah officials are discussing revamping and possibly closing what some may call Georgia’s “Bourbon Street.” Mayor Van Johnson says even before the attack in New Orleans city officials have discussed a redesign and maybe even closing River Street altogether to traffic. Johnson says he spoke with FBI after the attack in New Orleans about the city’s security, but he believes the cobblestones are natural barriers on River Street that act as speed bumps to keep people from speeding. He tells WSAV Savannah the city uses detailed threat assessments before each large event and the police department works closely with the GBI and FBI before all large celebrations downtown.
