Possibly harmful algal bloom reported on Lanier

Some boaters and other lake users have reported what appears to be harmful algal blooms on Lake Lanier, according to the Lake Lanier Association (LLA), which issued an advisory Tuesday.

“Please DO NOT enter the water in areas where you see what looks like green paint splattering the water or shores,” the advisory says. “These algal blooms can be especially harmful for YOU and your furry friends!”

According to the association, the blooms are showing up because of our unseasonably warm fall, the lack of rain and the lake turning over combined with the use of certain chemicals on lawns.

“It’s quite literally, a deadly combination. Most common in shallow waters and should dissipate with rain. The algal blooms come and go, so if you see these – stay out of the water AND please be sure to report the sighting!”

To do so, you can use the “Report a Problem” form on the LLA website, lakelanier.org/report-a-problem/

The toxicity of these (reported sightings) haven’t been confirmed, but the severity of the concern is worth alerting and we advise you visit the lake with caution,” LLA says. “A sample from these reports has been taken to the Gwinnett County Water Resources Laboratory and we hope to be able to offer an update on the results in the upcoming days. For more information, check out this helpful resource from our friends at Chattahoochee Riverkeeperchattahoochee.org/our-work/habs/
