(GEORGIA NEWS NETWORK) – As voters in the new Gwinnett County town near the Hall County line prepare to elect the municipality’s firs city council next month, there’s a new legal challenge to the incorporation of the town. Gwinnett is the latest to join the fight, filing a suit that claims the creation of the city is illegal because they’re not planning to impose a city property tax. The lawsuit also says Gwinnett should not be required to hold Mulberry city council elections this November. (EARLLIER STORY. POSTED JUNE 29: A Gwinnett County man has filed another suit in his continuing effort to block the creation of a new town in Gwinnett just a few miles from the Hall County line. Stephen Hughes’ latest suit was filed earlier this week and challenges the state law creating the new city subject to its approval by voters. That referendum passed during the May 21 General Election primaries. Hughes’ other suits, one of which was filed just days before the referendum, were dismissed. *The state elections board is looking into challenges of voter eligibility in Forsyth and several other counties. Members are also reviewing information this week into complaints in Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton, and Gwinnett. The AJC reports the board is also taking up investigations of double-voting and out-of-state voting. Meanwhile, in south Georgia, the eligibility of hundreds of voters in Bryan County are being challenged this week. WSAV reports one woman claims roughly 850 people should be taken off the voter rolls.
