UPDATE: Man shot, seriously wounded by sheriff’s deputy ID’d

The GBI Monday morning identified the man shot and wounded during the weekend by a Lumpkin County Sheriff’s deputy as Malachi Mayfield, 27, Dahlonega.

GBI NEWS RELEASE:

“Preliminary information indicates (that about 12:30 Saturday afternoon), the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a domestic dispute at a home in the Cavender Creek area. Deputies received information indicating a woman was injured during the domestic incident.

When deputies arrived, they encountered Mayfield armed with a knife. Mayfield made aggressive movements towards the deputies with the knife, and deputies shot Mayfield.

Mayfield was treated at the scene and taken to a local hospital. He is currently in stable condition.”

LUMPKIN CO. SHERIFF’S OFFICE NEWS RELEASE:

“Earlier this evening, in the Cavender Creek area, there was a domestic dispute which resulted in gunfire and injuries to a Lumpkin County man after a (Lumpkin )deputy (sheriff) shot a reported suspect.

The man suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. His wife, who was injured by the suspect, was transferred to NEGMC as well. The officer involved in the incident was not harmed.

GBI will be investigating this incident.”
