UPDATE 7:30 A.M. TUESDAY:
At least 18 people died in holiday weekend traffic accidents in Georgia. The state patrol says the latest occurred in parts of the state covered by the Brunswick patrol post and the Morrow Police Department.
At least two of the fatalities occurred in northeast Georgia. (See earlier post below.)
The count ran from 6:00 p.m. Friday until midnight Monday night.
UPDATE. 11:00 P.M. SUNDAY:
The death toll on Georgia roads and highways this holiday weekend stood at at least 16 as of 6:00 p.m. Sunday.
The number includes two fatalities in northeast Georgia, according to this Georgia State Patrol narrative:
“On 08/31/2024, at approximately 2126 hours, Troopers from Post 52 Hartwell responded to a two-vehicle crash on Georgia 17 around Old Royston Road in Franklin County.
A gray Honda Civic was traveling south on Georgia 17. A black Ford F-250 was traveling north on Georgia 17. The gray Honda Civic failed to maintain its lane of travel crossing over into the north bound lane of Georgia 17. The Honda Civic struck the front of the Ford F-250 with its front. The driver of the Honda Civic was pronounced deceased at the scene. A passenger in the Ford F-250 was also pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the Ford F-250 was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with serious injuries.

The latest fatalities were investigated by the state patrol posts in Tifton (1), Brunswick (1) and the Dunwoody Police Department (1), Pike County Sheriff’s Office (1) and Bibb County Sheriff’s Office (1).
EARLIER STORY. POSTED 7:45 A.M. SUNDAY: With still a couple of days left in the holiday weekend, the death toll from traffic accidents in Georgia is mounting.
They have taken the lives of at least eleven people the state patrol’s Labor Day count began at 6 p.m. Friday. Included are two in northeast Georgia – each worked by the patrol’s Hartwell post.
These figures are as of midnight Saturday.
In addition to the Hartwell area fatalities, others were work by patrol posts or sheriff’s offices in LaFayette (1), Thomasville (1), Valdosta (2), Augusta (1), Reidsville (3), and Eatonton (1).
